Rising 200 metres from the plains of the Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya's Lion Rock is one of Asia's most extraordinary archaeological sites. A 5th-century king built a palace-fortress on its flat summit, complete with gardens, frescoes and a mirror wall.
Climbing the rock
The stairway climbs past the famous Sigiriya frescoes and between the paws of a giant carved lion gateway to the summit ruins, where the water gardens and surrounding jungle stretch to the horizon. Start early to beat the heat and crowds.
Pidurangala & around
The neighbouring Pidurangala Rock offers the best view of Sigiriya itself and a quieter climb. The cave temples of Dambulla, another UNESCO site, are a short drive away and pair perfectly for a full day.
