What to see

Getting around
Colombo is compact enough to combine walking with metered tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps. The coastal railway line makes easy day trips south to Mount Lavinia's beach or on toward the historic fort city of Galle.

Colombo works well as a one- or two-day bookend to a longer island trip. Dress modestly when visiting temples, and carry water — the coastal humidity is high year-round.
