The UNESCO-listed fort is a living neighbourhood of boutique hotels, cafés, jewellers and galleries inside thick coral-and-granite walls. Walking the ramparts at sunset, past the old lighthouse and clock tower, is the definitive Galle experience.
Beaches nearby
The palm-fringed bays of Unawatuna and Jungle Beach are a short tuk-tuk ride away, and the surf and stilt-fishermen of the deep south are within easy reach for a day trip.

Galle pairs naturally with a coastal rail journey from Colombo. The fort is best explored on foot, early or late in the day to avoid the midday heat.
